The Great Colombian Cookbook:
A Pandemic Journey

During the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, I launched a collaborative initiative to reconnect with our roots using “The Great Colombian Cookbook.” A diverse group of professionals—ranging from philologists and designers to accountants—gathered virtually each week to explore a specific gastronomic region, turning the kitchen into a space for dialogue and feedback.

Our culinary cartography traversed the country’s immense biodiversity:

  • The Coasts: From the isolated, fish-rich Pacific networks to the Atlantic’s fusion of African and international flavors.

  • The Mountains: Exploring the hearty “mountaineer” dishes of Antioquia, the indigenous corn-based heritage of Santander, and the comforting high-altitude soups of Boyacá.

  • The Valleys and Jungles: Discovering the sugarcane sweets of Valle, and the exotic, raw ingredients of the Amazon and Llanos.

Beyond cultural preservation, the project became a lifeline. For one participant battling depression, this weekly ritual of designing and executing recipes provided a vital sense of purpose. This experience underscored that food is not merely sustenance, but a powerful vehicle for emotional healing and social cohesion.
