The project ROOT explores food as a primary mediator between cultures, utilizing photography to bridge the gap where spoken language often fails. Drawing on Massimo Montanari’s philosophy that eating the food of the “other” is an accessible form of cross-pollination, this work uses visual storytelling to navigate the complexities of being “Lost in Translation”.

Through a detailed Typology (Body, Leaf, Pulp, End), the camera documents the journey of ingredients like Daikon, Kohlrabi, and Asparagus across global borders. By addressing common “interpretation problems” found in text-heavy recipes, photography becomes the essential tool to communicate identity. Ultimately, ROOT challenges the viewer to see the final dish not just as sustenance, but as a visual cultural discourse that minimizes the risks of being misunderstood.
